Nanaimo Regional Hospital Energy Plant

Industrial

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Nanaimo Regional General Hospital continues to grow and expand creating a deficit within the electrical distribution infrastructure. This project redeveloped the electrical energy plant to meet current codes and standards with capacity for future growth.

The Electrical Energy Centre was built to increase the amount of normal and emergency power available to the NRGH campus, to comply with regulatory, redundancy, and operational requirements. A new gas train was constructed to the south of the existing 25kV substation building and connected with the existing incoming gas service. A new fueling location complete with two underground fuel storage tanks was built adjacent to the parking lot. New electrical duct banks and vaults were installed. A new 4,693 sq. ft. single storey, post-disaster designed building was constructed as well. It was comprised of a concrete foundation and slab-on-grade, structural steel framing, corrugated metal wall cladding along with large areas of louvers and glazing, and new service doors. The new building houses three new 1.4MW diesel fueled generators and associated equipment, and divided into two main areas; a switchgear room and a generator room.

This project was completed in January of 2018.
